KBR wins FEED Contract for World-Scale LNG Project in British Columbia

KBR (NYSE: KBR) today announced it was awarded a contract by Pacific NorthWest LNG Ltd., a subsidiary of Malaysia’s state-owned oil company (PETRONAS) and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX), to execute front-end engineering and design (FEED) and early detailed engineering work for a world-scale LNG export facility at Lelu Island near Prince Rupert, British Columbia. KBR is partnered with JGC Corporation for the project.

The purpose of the project is to process shale gas produced from British Columbia’s North Montney region into LNG that is suitable for export. The contract calls for FEED and early detailed engineering work for a two-train LNG plant with a yearly capacity of 12 million tons and associated shipping facilities. Associated facilities include utilities, storage, loading, ship berthing and personnel accommodation facilities. This project allows KBR to build on our extensive Canadian experience and resources including work that is already on-going in other parts of British Columbia.

"We are pleased to play an important role in this world-scale facility. This award is further indication of KBR's position as a leading provider of gas monetization solutions for our clients around the world," said Mitch Dauzat President, KBR Gas Monetization. "We look forward to working with Pacific NorthWest and our partner JGC Corporation on this historic LNG export facility."

ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation Symposium 2013 draws more than 200 attendees

A joint conference of the International Society of Automation (ISA) and the Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT) Society attracted more than 200 attendees to Cleveland, Ohio, USA last week to learn about the latest advances in instrumentation and mechanical failure prevention, and to discover practical synergies between the two long-standing professional associations.

The theme of the conference—ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation and MFPT 2013—focused on sensors and process measurement and control systems designed to improve reliability, safety and affordability, particularly in aerospace, oil and gas, chemical and manufacturing. A strong emphasis was placed throughout the technical program on avoiding and significantly reducing hazardous situations and accidents.

In total, more than 120 technical papers and presentations were delivered, 58 through ISA and 62 through MFPS. Other highlights of the event included three high-level keynote presentations, three tutorials, an ISA training course on industrial wireless technology, two technical discussion groups, a panel session, an exhibit (featuring products and services from 19 vendors), technical tours, networking opportunities and social functions.

“Collaborating with ISA on our annual MFPT conference was a huge success,” states Chris Pomfret, MFPT’s Executive Director. “The attendees enjoyed a broader and synergistic technical scope, the exhibitors had access to a larger audience, and the networking value for everyone was raised. With so many conferences being offered and too little time and resources for attendees to participate in all of them, it’s essential that entities like ISA and MFPT collaborate to create successes like this one.”

Ruth Sikorski, the Chair of ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation Symposium (IIS), emphasizes that the conference gave ISA and MFPT the opportunity to educate and prepare technical leaders for the challenges of the future.

“As technical societies, we have an obligation to help train our successors--the ones who will be implementing the next phase of our progression toward a more knowledge-based, net-centric industrial base,” she says.

Yokogawa announces Field Wireless Systems Partnership with Petrobras

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary Yokogawa America do Sul Ltda. has signed a partnership agreement with Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) on the evaluation of field wireless technology based on the ISA100.11a*1 industrial automation wireless communications standard.

Through this partnership, Yokogawa will provide Petrobras technical support on the use of field wireless communications and have the opportunity to demonstrate its field wireless products at this company’s test plant. To broaden the use of ISA100.11a-compliant products and related services in plant-wide wireless communications applications, Yokogawa is aggressively promoting its “Wireless Anywhere” business concept. Petrobras, on the other hand, wishes to gather more data about the use of this technology in its production processes with the aim of assessing wireless communication robustness and performance. In so doing, it will be able to properly apply this technology and fully explore its benefits.

Yokogawa will provide Petrobras technical support in the area of field wireless communications. Our wealth of knowledge and experience in this field will allow Petrobras to accelerate the introduction of this technology at its facilities.  Yokogawa will also support the Petrobras technology development and application group in the conduct of large scale tests of field wireless systems at a Petrobras test plant. Data on device installation conditions and system configuration as well as insights into user needs that are acquired through these tests will be used to advance Yokogawa’s development and promotion of field wireless products.

The ISA100.11a standard ensures high reliability, application flexibility, network expandability, and compatibility with a variety of wired communication standards such as FOUNDATION™ fieldbus, HART®, and PROFIBUS. “ISA100.11a full functional” field wireless network systems and devices make use of state-of-the-art dual redundant technologies that enable a much higher level of reliability, and allow massive scalability and long-range communications.

Micropilot Level Measurement in liquids and solids

Endress+Houser offers new standard in radar instrumentation – the Micropilot family: Safe, precise, efficient.  The new Micropilot family comprises a total of seven device types – from the standard product for basic applications through to high-performance versions for sophisticated high-pressure or high-temperature applications.

Endress+Hauser as full-range supplier supports you with innovative field instrument solutions. With more than one million installed instruments of the Time-of-Flight method, we offer you the know-how as world market leader. Our instruments create new standards so that you can concentrate completely on your processes and requirements.

The new instrument generation provides safety, precision and efficiency across the entire life cycle for you. This will seamlessly optimize your production and safety processes during the full life cycle of your plant.

Functional safety

The hardware and software of the new generation of Time-of-Flight instrumentation is developed according to- IEC61508 and can be used up to SIL3 in homogeneous redundancy. Using continuous self-monitoring, Micropilot always checks its correct functionality within the measuring instrument. If a failure occurs, the instrument changes to its safety status. The proof test can easily be started by an optional operating tool or directly from the control room. The communication in between the setup tooling via DTM and the device is permanently monitored.

HistoROM data management concept

The innovative and intelligent HistoROM data management concept stores the parameters of an instrument during commissioning. If similar measuring points are commissioned, the display serves as a data carrier like a USB stick.

Multi-Echo Tracking analysis of echo signals

Endress+Hauser has developed an even more intelligent and reliable echo signal evaluation by the echo signal curve – Multi-Echo Tracking. If obstacles, e.g. heating coils, protrude into the signal path these interfering signals must be suppressed, so that they are not analyzed.

If electronics are defective, they must be replaced by new electronics. HistoROM has stored all parameter settings and transfers the data automatically to the electronics and the instrument restarts operation.
